Winter in southwest Missouri doesn't always bring a lot of snow, but it does bring cold mornings, freezing rain and the occasional ice storm that turns back roads between Sarcoxie, Mount Vernon and Aurora slick overnight. Whether you drive an F-150 to a job site in Joplin or haul hay outside Monett, a little preparation now helps your truck start every morning and stop when you need it to. Here's a winter checklist from the service team at Sarcoxie Ford.
1. Check Your Battery Before the First Hard Freeze
Cold temperatures reduce a battery's power just when your engine needs more of it to start. If your battery is more than three or four years old, or your truck has been slow to crank, have it tested before temperatures drop. A quick battery test during routine service can save you from a dead battery on a 20-degree morning.
2. Take a Close Look at Your Tires
Tires do most of the work on wet or icy pavement. Check tread depth and look for uneven wear, which can point to an alignment issue. Tire pressure also drops as temperatures fall, so check it more often through the winter. If it's time for new tires, our service team can help you choose a set that fits the way you drive. Ford is currently advertising a $100 rebate when you buy four select tires (see the banner on our homepage), and our service advisors can tell you which tires qualify.
3. Top Off Fluids and Check Coolant Protection
Make sure your coolant mix is rated to protect against freezing, and switch to a winter windshield washer fluid that won't freeze in the lines. Staying on schedule with oil changes matters too: clean oil flows better on cold starts and helps protect your engine.
4. Inspect Brakes and Wiper Blades
Freezing rain and treated roads make good brakes and clear visibility essential. If your brakes squeal, grind or feel soft, have them inspected. Worn wiper blades streak and chatter in sleet, and replacing them is quick and inexpensive.
5. Test Your 4x4 System and Heat Before You Need Them
If you drive a 4x4 F-150, Super Duty, Ranger, Bronco or Expedition, engage four-wheel drive briefly on a dry day to make sure it engages smoothly. While you're at it, confirm your heater and defroster are working properly so you can clear frosted glass quickly.
6. Pack a Simple Winter Kit
Keep an ice scraper, gloves, a blanket, a flashlight, jumper cables and a phone charger behind the seat. If you drive rural routes around Crane and Sarcoxie, add bottled water and a few snacks in case you have to wait for help.
